Woman Dies In Possible Hit & Run On Route 2
State Police Looking For Public's Help In Deadly Accident
LANCASTER (WBZ) ―
State Police are looking for a tractor trailer that possibly clipped an SUV late Monday night on Route 2 West in Lancaster. The accident killed 18-year-old Ashley Foley of Hubbardston and injured another teen.
Police say the Jeep Cherokee Ashley was driving in the left travel lane on Route 2 West at about 10:42 p.m. Monday, when the passenger side may have come in contact with the rear of a tractor trailer driving in the right lane. "Preliminary investigation includes witness statements that has led us to believe it was a collision or a near collision," said State Police Trooper Eric Benson.
The Jeep spun out of control, rolled over and came to rest in the median near the Johnny Appleseed rest area.
Foley, who was trapped inside the SUV, died at the accident scene.
An unidentified 15-year-old girl was riding in the passenger seat and survived the crash with only minor injuries. She was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Both girls were wearing their seat belts.
Principal Joan Paula of the Hubbardston Center School, which Ashley attended, is distressed by the news. "I would call Ashley very, very friendly
a wonderful girl, and I'm very sorry that her family is going through this right now."
Ashley went on to Quabbin Regional High School in Barre, and was training to be a nursing assistant.
State police say if there was contact between the Jeep and the truck, it could have been slight. "This might have been a situation when the operator of the tractor trailer was unaware of the collision and the crash, therefore, the state police urge all truck drivers that were in the area of Rt. 2 in Lancaster last night to check their trailers for potential damage," said Trooper Benson.
Officers describe the tractor-trailer as a light red tractor, towing a white trailer, equipped with many lights.
Police think there could be damage to the driver's side, most likely in the middle or the rear.
If you witnessed the crash, saw a truck with this description in the area, or have any other information please call State Police at (978) 537-2188.
