A fire in Lawrence has left at least 16 people homeless on Christmas Eve.
The blaze broke out around lunch time Monday on the third floor of a triple decker on Fairmont Street in Lawrence.
Sixteen people lived inside the apartment building and some had just moved in. Luckily everyone who lived there was able to get out safely.
Hector Pita, who owns the home, said the fire started on the third floor, probably in the kitchen. He said it was too powerful to put out.
"When I opened the third floor there was a lot of smoke and fire," Pita said. "I just ran. It was so quick, I couldn't do anything about it."
The building suffered heavy fire and water damage.
Firefighters said everyone was out of the building when they arrived but the blaze had a good head start on them, and it was difficult to contain. They were able to save some of the Christmas presents.
The tenants were allowed back into their homes Monday evening to salvage what they could from their apartments.
The Red Cross said it will help all of the families with presents and housing.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
