Legal To T Conductors: Halibut's On Us
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Legal Sea Foods, once and for all, is trying to settle its beef with MBTA conductors.
The popular restaurant chain is offering free meals to members of the Boston Carmen's Union. It's Legal's way of apologizing for a series of Green Line trolley ads showing "fresh" fish making wiseacre remarks. On one ad, the fish said, "This conductor looks like a halibut."
Many of the drivers were not amused. The Carmen's Union complained to MBTA management, which ordered the "halibut" ad removed.
In a tongue-in-cheek apology subsequently aired on radio, Legal president Roger Berkowitz said, "Most conductors don't look anything like halibuts. Some look like groupers or flounders."
The union still failed to see the humor. Union president Stephan MacDougall threatened to organize a boycott of Legal Sea Foods.
In a full-page ad in Monday's Boston Globe, Legal Sea Foods said it has sent a gift certificate for a free meal to each T conductor.
"We were just having a little fun, trying to humorously show how 'fresh' our fish is," Monday's ad said.
"And may we suggest the halibut," it added.
