Longfellow Bridge Reopens To All Traffic
BOSTON (AP) ―
After more than six months of lane restrictions, the Longfellow Bridge has finally been reopened to all traffic.
The Department of Conservation and Recreation closed the inside lanes in both directions last June to allow for repairs to the century-old bridge, which spans the Charles River between Boston and Cambridge. That reduced traffic to one lane in each direction.
The Boston-to-Cambridge lane was reopened in September and the DCR said Thursday that the Federal Highway Administration has given the green light to reopen the Cambridge-to-Boston lane.
The DCR says it has spent more than $12.5 million on bridge repairs since August 2007.
Repairs to a sidewalk on the bridge that has been closed to pedestrians since last June are expected to be completed by July 4.
