Decorative plates which weigh about 200-pounds are being removed from the sides of the Longfellow Bridge.
State officials fear the loose pieces could fall into the Charles River and pose a danger to boaters. Age was the primary cause of loose siding.
The 100-year-old bridge is maintained by the Department of Conservation and Recreation. We're told the bridge is structurally sound and no other parts are considered imminently dangerous.
Work on the Longfellow will take place during the evening and overnight hours from now until mid-October.
The spans connects Cambridge to Boston and carries the Red Line subway.
