Man Who Bites Off Boy's Lip Admits To Drug Use
Ty Chan Accused Of Biting His Son's Lip Off
LOWELL, Mass. (WBZ) ―
A Lowell man accused of biting off the entire lip of his 22-month-old son in November was arraigned Friday and admitted to police he had taken ecstasy and cocaine hours before the attack, the Middlesex District Attorney's Office said.
Lowell police officials said 26-year-old Ty Chan bit off the lip of the little boy in mid-November. He was arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court Friday and was ordered held on $10,000 with conditions that he have no contact with his children or any kids under 16.
Police said Chan admitted to taking drugs before biting off his child's lip.
"There are no more disturbing cases than those in which a young, vulnerable child is severely abused," said District Attorney Gerry Leone. "We allege that this defendant committed this savage act, likely leaving the child with lasting scars and injuries."
The boy was first taken to a Lowell hospital but was later transported to Children's Hospital in Boston where he was treated for his injuries.
Police said they were called to 1370 Middlesex Street around 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 17 on a report that a child's lip had been bitten off. They said they found the boy covered in blood and were able to recover the detached lip.
Doctors were able to reattach the boy's lip.
Chan faces charges of assault and battery on a child causing serious injury and mayhem. A judge has also placed him under 24-hour house arrest except to go to health evaluation and treatment appointments.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 5 in Lowell Superior Court.
