A man from Brazil has been charged with practicing medicine without a license after a woman died during a liposuction procedure done in the basement of a home in Framingham.
49-year-old Luiz Carlos Ribeiro and his wife were arraigned Monday in Framingham District Court. Both were arrested early Monday morning, a day after the 24-year-old patient died. Neighbors identified the victim as Fabiola de Paula.
The Framingham woman was brought to MetroWest Medical Center Sunday evening, unconscious. She was pronounced dead a short time later.
Prosecutors say a brief investigation led to the arrests of Luiz Carlos Ribeiro and Ana Maria Miranda Ribeiro. Police say they administered illegally obtained narcotics and performed a surgical procedure on the woman in the basement of a residence in Framingham. Neither is licensed to practice medicine in Massachusetts.
In court Monday, prosecutors say the couple had 30-day work visas for the sole purpose of performing plastic surgery in the basement of a local condominium. The alleged surgeries were performed on massage tables in the basement of Ribeiro's condo.
"There was a tremendous amount of blood protein on the floor in the basement in that location," prosecutor Lee Hettinger said.
An autopsy on de Paula was scheduled for Monday.
Middlesex District Attorney Martha Coakley says two other women have come forward to say they underwent medical procedures performed by the couple, including one woman currently hospitalized with an infection.
Ribeiro is also charged with drug possession, illegal possession of a hypodermic device and possession of a controlled substance. He was ordered held on $250,000 cash bail.
Ribeiro's wife, 49-year-old Miranda Ribeiro, is also charged with drug possession. She was held on $50,000 cash bail.
