Lung Transplant Patient Returns Home

by Eileen Curran
BOSTON (WBZ) ― Praying, hand wringing and nervous tears, but of the very good kind, as the family of Billy Senopoulos awaits his return.

"Last time I saw him he was on his back, he's coming home now," Billy's uncle tells WBZ's Eileen Curran.

The first time we met Billy was two years ago, as he awaited a life-saving double lung transplant. Cystic Fibrosis was slowly killing him, but it didn't stop him from living.

He fell in love with his sister's best friend Danielle, a beautiful girl with big eyes and an even bigger heart, who when Billy collapsed the day after their May wedding, had to make the crucial decision three weeks later to fly to a California hospital for a transplant.

Billy's dad says his son is a fighter and has surprised event he experts with his courage and strength. "They gave him up, said let him go, let the blood gas take him but he didn't quit, we didn't quit."

Billy got his lungs in June, but had to stay in California for follow up care, which brings us to today. He was greeted by family and friends when he and his wife arrived at Logan Airport.

"It's the most amazing feeling, we're so happy to be home right now," said Billy.

The young couple has faced more in five months, than most couples face in a lifetime. They feel they can now handle anything.

"It's been a long road, with a happy ending, I should say," said Billy.
