Lynn Man Killed While Working In Yard

LYNN (WBZ) ― A man was killed Thursday afternoon when he was hit by a car while working in his yard, neighbors and witnesses said.

The victim was William Laurino, 60, an assistant deputy superintendent for the Essex County Sheriff's Department.

Witnesses told WBZ the driver of an SUV lost control of the vehicle while trying to go around a car taking a left at a light on Lynnfield Street (Route 129). The SUV went off the road and pinned Laurino against a tree.

"I know the gentleman was out there blowing leaves," said neighbor Shawn Jordan. "The guy was taking a left and the other S.U.V. went around and hit the guy. He's a nice guy, you know. He didn't deserve it."

The driver of the SUV, Shawn Newhall, 41, of Lynn, was in serious condition Thursday night in a Boston hospital. His 5-year-old son was less seriously hurt.

Police said Newhall is not facing charges at this point.

Laurino was the father of two grown sons. He had worked for the Sheriff's Department for 18 years, most recently in the Records Department.

"Mr. Laurino was a class act," Paul Flemming Jr., spokesman for Sheriff Frank G. Cousins Jr., said in a statement. "He loved coming to work every day. He enjoyed all that he did when at work and he enjoyed interacting with all of his colleagues. The department is shocked by this."

"It's pretty tragic," said neighbor Mike Murphy. "I mean they need to do something about this traffic light here."
