Talks aimed at reaching an out-of-court settlement of suits brought by the family of a Jamaica Plain woman killed in the collapse of a Big Dig ceiling tunnel last summer have broken down, the Boston Globe reports.
Milena Del Valle was killed last July 10 when a portion of the Interstate 90 tunnel ceiling in South Boston collapsed as she and her husband drove to Logan Airport. Her husband was not injured.
Del Valle's husband and three children have sued 15 companies that designed and built the tunnel and the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, which oversaw its construction. They are seeking hundreds of millions of dollars.
The defendants made at least one settlement offer, according to the Globe. It was rejected as too low by lawyers for Del Valle's family.
One state official who was briefed on the talks told the Globe there was "a big gap" between what the defendants offered and what the family was seeking.
The secret talks, which began last Monday, were conducted by a mediator from Chicago.
The family's lawyers are now expected to proceed with the litigation.
