The Boston Red Sox have pulled off their first deal at baseball's Winter Meetings in Dallas. The Sox traded backup catcher Doug Mirabelli to San Diego for veteran second baseman Mark Loretta.
The 34-year-old Loretta hit .280 in 105 games last season with 3 home runs and 38 RBI. He had an on-base percentage of .360.
Loretta has played for Milwaukee, Houston, and San Diego. He's a .301 lifetime hitter with a career on-base percentage of .365.
The 35-year-old Mirabelli joined the Sox in 2002 and spent 4 seasons in Boston. He and Jason Varitek made up one of the best catching duos in all of baseball. Mirabelli was best known for his ability to catch Tim Wakefield's knuckleball.
