Wampanoags, Middleborough Reach Casino Deal
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
The town of Middleborough and the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe have hammered out a deal to build a new destination casino.
If approved by residents and the Wampanoag's tribal council, we're told this would be the richest agreement ever between a sovereign Indian tribe and a host community. "I will say that the negotiations were tough, and I would like to applaud the town for staying with us and making sure they got what they wanted -- or as close as they could," said Tribal Chairman Glenn Marshal.
Middleboro stands to gain at least $11 million a year and another $250 million for infrastructure improvements in town. "
In addition, the tribe will spend $2 million for two police cruisers and two advanced life support ambulances, and the hiring and training costs of eight police officers and 16 firefighters.
Town officials are also seeking a percentage of the casino's slot revenue. This proposal is supported by the tribe but still needs state approval. They dragged me kicking and screaming, but I will tell you that at the end of the day, it's really about a partnership with the town," said Marshall.
The Wampanoags are looking to build a 150,000 square foot gaming facility with 4000 slots and 125 table games. The tribe also wants a 1500 room hotel, complete with shops, restaurants and a golf course.
Middleborough town residents are scheduled to vote on the proposal on July 28.
Casino gambling still needs approval from the state. Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has commissioned a panel to study gaming in Massachusetts. That report should be done by the end of the summer.
