The first step in the state's ambitious new health insurance plan begins Monday.
Officials are now enrolling the poorest residents into a state-administered program, known as Commonwealth Care. Anyone living below the poverty line in Massachusetts - an income of about $9,800 a year - will become part of the state's free care pool. They will be reimbursed for the bulk of their hospital visits. That's about 62,000 people.
Governor Romney signed the program into law back in April. But it has remained in the planning stages until now.
The next stage in January will involve residents who earn up to three times the poverty level. They will have to pay between $18 and $106 a month toward their premiums.
In July of 2007, residents earning more than three times the poverty level will be required to have their own insurance or they will face tax penalties.
