Woman Killed By Amtrak Train In Medford
MEDFORD (AP) ―
An 83-year-old woman was struck and killed by an Amtrak train as she tried to cross the tracks at a commuter rail station in West Medford.
MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo says authorities are unsure why the woman was on the tracks when she was hit at 11:15 a.m.
Lillian Silva, of Methuen, was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Silva was hit by an Amtrak Downeaster train headed from Boston to Portland, Maine. Amtrak spokeswoman Tracy Connell says that train doesn't normally stop in West Medford.
Pesaturo says the train's engineer told transit police he sounded the train's horn when he saw Silva on the tracks. The engineer braked, but not in time to avoid hitting the woman.
Amtrak and the commuter rail system use side-by-side tracks at the rail platform where Silva was hit.
