Marlboro, Palmer Eyed As Additional Casino Sites
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Marlborough and Palmer are the two latest sites in Massachusetts to be eyed for possible casino resorts should the Legislature legalize casino gambling.
The Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority signed a deal last week for a 150-acre plot of land in Palmer near the Massachusetts Turnpike.
Even if gaming is not approved by the governor, developers still plan to build a retail complex.
There's been an appetite for casino gambling in Palmer for at least ten years. In a non-binding referendum in 1997, 55% of residents voted in favor of a gaming and entertainment complex.
John Lizak, a 90-year-old contractor and land owner sold the 150 acres for $3 million to Northeast Realty Associates, which is working with the operators of the Mohegan Sun.
"Oh I think it'll help. We lost 10 factories in the last 50 years," said Lizak.
Meanwhile, the majority shareholder and C-E-O of Las Vegas Sands Corporation says he remains interested in building a casino off Interstate 495 in the Marlborough area.
The Telegram and Gazette reports that Sheldon Adelson met yesterday with House Speaker Sal DiMasi, who opposes casino gambling.
Last weekend, voters in Middleborough approved a deal with the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe to build a casino in the southeastern Massachusetts town.
