When Rosa Lo speaks of her 23-year -ld son, she still uses the present tense.
"He's a great kid. He's anything you can ask for from a son and he's really determined. Whatever he wants to do he just goes ahead to do it."
For Staff Sgt. Edmond Lo, that was active duty army. He turned down a college scholarship to enlist out of high school.
An explosives expert, Lo was a year into his second Iraq tour -- when a knock at his family's door brought the worst possible news.
"Two well-dressed military guys at the door, I was kind of stung," said Lo. "I feel a lot of sorrow to have him go away."
Lo was killed in Samarra City as he tried to disarm a roadside bomb.
Lo first showed interest in the military at Salem High School, where he was an active member of the junior ROTC program.
"He just liked being around people, People just flocked to him naturally. Had a funny sense of humor at times and he just enjoyed the camaraderie, and he really loved drill, excelled in drill."
Chief Master Sergeant Tom Puzzo says Lo was a quiet leader, very dedicated, very strong academically.
"It wasn't any gung ho rah rah type thing like after 9/11, it was just something he quietly wanted to do for his country," said Puzzo.
The country into which he was born. The country his parents chose 40 years ago when they emigrated from Hong Kong.
Lo's body was returned to Dover Air Force Base. Funeral arrangements are pending.
