A bronze memorial dedicated to a Wellesley woman who was killed in the September 11th attacks is missing and appears to be stolen.
The memorial to Neilie Casey was dedicated at Nobska Light in Woods Hole in 2002. A caretaker noticed it was missing on Sunday.
"It is absolutely nothing like the shock value of September 11th, but it's a secondary punch in the gut," said Neilie's mother, Anne Heffernan.
The monument stood at an idyllic point overlooking Vineyard Sound. It was the place where Neilie got engaged.
"They could take a memorial to a beautiful girl....and melt it down for whatever they can get and not care about the joy this site brought," adds Anne.
The bronze and copper artwork is the family's only memorial to Neilie. It stood on federal property, meaning police could charge the thieves with a felony.
Neilie Casey was on American Airlines Flight 11. WBZ's Lisa Hughes is married to Neilie Casey's husband Mike.
They shared their personal story last September 11.
