An 18-year-old is wanted for a brutal hate crime at a gay bar in New Bedford overnight.
Police say Jacob Robida walked into the bar with a gun and a hatchet and started attacking customers. Three people were shot. Authorities say Robida is armed and dangerous.
According to police, Robida went into Puzzles Lounge on North Front Street shortly before midnight and asked the bartender if it was a gay bar.
The bartender, who only identified himself as "Philip", told CBS4's Karen Anderson that Robida then ordered a drink and asked if there were any other gay bars in the area. Philip told him there was a lesbian bar down the street.
A short time later, Robida ordered another drink, walked to the back of the bar room near a pool table, pulled out a hatchet and allegedly started swinging. When the bartender and another man grabbed the hatchet, Robida allegedly pulled out his gun and started shooting.
One of the victims was shot in the stomach.
Two other men were both shot twice in the face. Both men also suffered cuts and lacerations.
All three victims are being treated at Boston area hospitals. We do not know their conditions.
The bartender said Robida then pointed the gun at his face and pulled the trigger. But there was only a click the gun was apparently empty.
"My heart is still in my stomach from that one," Philip told Anderson. "He never showed any emotion. Just a cold, dull look."
Philip said Robida then ran out the front door.
He is described as 5-feet-6 inches tall, weighing about 200 pounds, with short, dark hair. He had a thin goatee and was wearing a black trench coat.
He was last seen driving a green 1999 Pontiac Grand Am with Massachusetts license plates 85E-C58.
Robida has a Web site on MySpace.com, where he talks about his choice of a murder weapon being a hatchet. There are also pictures of him wielding a gun with a swastika in the back ground. There are messages posted from people who say they are friends of Robida's asking where he is.
Police say Robida has extremely violent tendencies.
According to the police affidavit, officers went to Robida's home and spoke to his mother, Stephanie Oliver. She said her son came home around 1 a.m., bleeding from the head, then left again.
The officers went to his bedroom and found what they described as "Nazi regalia" and anti-Semitic writings on the wall.
Robida is known to New Bedford police because he graduated in 2001 from the city's Junior Police Academy, according to acting Police Chief David Provencher. The "boot camp" program is designed to teach discipline to 12- to 14-year-olds.
