Marijuana Found In Newton Fire Chief's Car

NEWTON (WBZ) ― A small amount of marijuana was found in the Newton fire chief's car Thursday during a routine car cleaning, a spokesman for the mayor's office said.

Spokesman Jeremy Solomon said firefighters found the marijuana in an envelope under the front seat of Fire Chief Joseph LaCroix's car and turned it over to him. Solomon said LaCroix then contacted City Hall and was advised to notify the police department about the drugs.

Lt. David Vaillancourt with the Marlborough Police Department said no charges have been filed against LaCroix.

The exact amount of marijuana found in LaCroix's car is unknown, but Solomon said it was "small."  Solomon said officials don't suspect LaCroix used or had any illicit drugs.

LaCroix released a statement Friday afternoon saying, "I want to make it very clear that throughout my more than 36-year career as a firefighter, I have never imperiled the safety of Newton firefighters or the general public by using or possessing illegal drugs."

LaCroix added, "I am cooperating fully with the Marlborough Police Department in their investigation. I deeply regret this incident and I apologize for any embarrassment this has caused to the members of the Newton Fire Department, Mayor Cohen, and to the citizens of Newton."

LaCrois has been with the Newton Fire Department since 1972 and was promoted to fire chief three years ago.
