Newton North could soon experience a serious facelift. Voters have approved plans to build a multi-million dollar school Tuesday night.
The proposed $151 million school, which would be the most expensive public high school in the state, would be a 400,000 square-foot building designed to include a glass-walled cafeteria, a 2,000-seat football stadium, two theaters and two large science labs.
Those who support the plan include Newton Mayor David Cohen, who, according to the Newton Tab, says the city can afford the investment without taking on debt-related tax increases.
Critics, according to the paper, say the multi-million dollar project would take away needed money from the elementary schools and other buildings in need of repair.
Cohen has pledged to build a new school even if the majority vote is no.
The proposal was passed by a couple thousand votes, according to WBZ-TV's Christina Hager.
Newton North high school's building is 35-years old.
