RI Judge Sets Trial Date For Nightclub Owner

PROVIDENCE, RI (AP) ― A July trial date has been set for one of the two owners of a Rhode Island nightclub where 100 people died in a 2003 fire.

Michael Derderian's case is scheduled for July 31st in Kent County, where the nightclub was located.

Derderian and his brother, Jeffrey, are each charged with 200 counts of involuntary manslaughter in the blaze at The Station nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island.

More than 30 of those who died were from Massachusetts.

The fire began when sparks from a rock band's pyrotechnics ignited flammable soundproofing foam inside the club.

A third defendant, former Great White tour manager Daniel Biechele, pleaded guilty last month to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter for setting off the pyrotechnics without a permit.

Jeffrey Derderian is expected to be tried after his brother.
