Tourism Official Quits Job Amid Oprah Scandal
PROVINCETOWN (WBZ) ―
A Provincetown man who falsely claimed his latest novel made Oprah's Book Club is now out of a job.
Bill Schneider resigned yesterday as Provincetown tourism director.
He previously admitted to falsely claiming on his Web site that he had been interviewed on Oprah Winfrey's TV show.
The self-published novel "Crossed Paths," recounts the story of two men who fell in love in the 1970s, one of whom takes his own life.
Provincetown Town Manager Sharon Lynn told the Cape Cod Times that Schneider was not going to be fired, and resigned on his own.
The author says he's "ready for a new challenge," but would not elaborate on what prompted him to step down.
A selection to Oprah's Book Club can often lead to a huge jump in sales.
