The annual Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony in Concord, New Hampshire is always solemn, but today's event was even more so, as the names of two officers killed since last year's event were added to the honor roll.
Officers from Franconia led a procession of several hundred officers today, one week to the day after Franconia Corporal Bruce McKay was shot to death. He usually represents the department at the event. A large contigent also was present from Manchester, where officer Michael Briggs was shot to death last fall.
Governor John Lynch praised all 42 New Hampshire officers who were being honored, as well as their families, whom he said also pay a high sacrifice.
Briggs' bicycle patrol partner said the gathering was to honor the officers for the way they lived, not the way they died.
