The Cape Cod Times reports the prosecutor in the Christa Worthington murder trial had dinner earlier this week with several jurors and court officers.
Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe said there was nothing improper about the dinner and no professional rules of conduct were violated because the gathering was initiated by the jurors.
The group met at Wimpy's Seafood Cafe on Monday nearly three weeks after the end of the trial. Christopher McCowen was convicted of rape and murder and sentenced to life in prison. The case is under appeal.
''There is nothing at all inappropriate in what this jury did and nothing inappropriate about accepting the invitation,'' O'Keefe said.
A past president of the Massachusetts Bar Association told the Cape Cod Times he didn't doubt prosecutor Robert Welsh's integrity, but he would have made a different decision.
''Welsh is a very honorable individual,'' Edward Ryan Jr. said. ''If it were me, I wouldn't put myself in a position of doing anything with jurors post-trial, win, lose or draw.''
O'Keefe also told the Times he had accepted similar invitations from jurors at least a half-dozen times in the past 20 years.
