Randolph Fireworks Go Phhht
Show Canceled After Firefighters Nix Overtime
RANDOLPH (WBZ) ―
The town of Randolph has canceled Thursday night's fireworks display.
Fire Chief Charles D. Foley Jr. called off the show after firefighters declined to work overtime shifts. They are needed to monitor the detonation of the fireworks and to make sure that sparks do not ignite the roof of Randolph High School.
Without those firefighters, "I cannot be assured that valuable capital assets of the town would be safe from harm," Foley said in a statement.
Randolph has had July 3 fireworks for the past 12 years. Until this year, the firefighters union had raised the money for the show.
The union declined this year, citing the weak economy and involvement in another fundraiser, so selectmen raised the funds.
