Aid Offered To Kids Of Nightclub Fire Victims
WARWICK, R.I. (WBZ) ―
Seven colleges and universities in Rhode Island agree to provide scholarships and other aid for the 76 children who lost parents in the 2003 Station nightclub fire.
That's according to nightclub co-owner Jeffrey Derderian, who announced the commitments this afternoon.
In total, the schools have pledged 12.8 million dollars in scholarships.
Of the 100 who died in the blaze, more than 30 were from Massachusetts.
The pledges were secured through The Station Education Fund, which Derderian formed along with his brother and fellow club owner, Michael.
The fire at The Station nightclub began when sparks from a rock band's pyrotechnics ignited flammable foam installed as soundproofing.
The school include Johnson and Wales, New England Institute of Technology, Bryant University, Providence College, Brown University and Salve Regina.
