LINCOLN, R.I. (WBZ) ―
The old Lincoln Park has begun its transformation into one of the biggest gambling centers in the country.
The newly named Twin River has more than 2,100 slot machines and that number will more than double when the $220 million renovation is complete in the fall.
Park officials say most patrons come from within 15 miles, but now they hope to draw a bigger crowd from as far as 60 miles away -- that includes the Boston and Worcester areas.
The expansion project also includes a 2,000 seat arena.
"Now I think there are so many options. We have greyhound racing, the slots, but if you want to come for dinner and catch a show, we have that as well," said spokesperson Cynthia Stern.
State lawmakers will be watching Twin River closely because millions of dollars of state revenue are at stake. The machines are expected to bring in about $255 million a year and about 60 percent of that goes to the state.
Twin River lacks some major draws of the big casinos, including a hotel and table games such as blackjack and roulette, but Twin Rivers will have more slots than all but three casinos in the country. Those casinos are Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun and Bally's in Atlantic City.
