Rockland Fire Kills Woman, Injures 3 Firefighters

Fire Investigators Considered Blaze Suspicious

ROCKLAND, Mass. (WBZ) ― A woman is dead and three firefighters were injured in a Rockland blaze  Wednesday that police say is suspicious.

The fire broke out inside a home at 243 Centre Avenue late Wednesday afternoon.

The Boston Globe is identifying the victim as 42-year-old Kerrin Kelly-Nelson of Rockland.

Rockland fire officials said when crews were called to the scene around 4:30 p.m., the fire was not very large. However, as firefighters moved their way into the home, a 20-propane tank inside the kitchen exploded, creating a fire ball.

Three firefighters, including one fire lieutenant, were injured as they tried to escape the blaze.

"One went out the window, and one went out the back," said Rockland fire Chief Michael Sammon. "They're very lucky their injuries were not life-threatening."

Kelly-Nelson was found in a second-floor bedroom, was taken to Brockton Hospital and died early Thursday.

Two of the injured firefighters remained in the hospital as a precaution, but their injuries are not life-threatening.

Fire officials said the blaze is considered suspicious, and crime scene tape was set up around the property.

Storing propane tanks in an enclosed are, like a kitchen or a basement, is against the law.
