N.H. Cop's Funeral Set For His Wedding Site

FRANCONIA, N.H. (WBZ) ― The funeral for the New Hampshire police officer who was shot and run over by a man last week will be held Thursday at Cannon Mountain. Franconia Cpl. Bruce McKay was due to be married there in July.

Thousands of mourners are expected to attend.

McKay's killer, 24-year-old Liko Kenney, was shot to death by a passing motorist when he wouldn't put down his gun Friday evening. Among those expected at Kenney's funeral were Olympic skier Bode Miller, a cousin.

McKay, 48, had been a Franconia officer for 12 years.

"His father is here from New York, his sister, his fiancee," State Police Lt. John Scarinza said. "They are doing well."

Calling hours were scheduled for Wednesday.

A photograph of McKay was at the doorway of the police station, along with information about making donations in his name.

Donations were being handled by the North Country Public Safety Officers' Benevolent Foundation, which was founded last year after the police chief in neighboring Sugar Hill, Jose Pequeno, was seriously wounded while on military duty in Iraq. Townspeople also set up a separate Bruce McKay Family Fund.

The foundation, created to benefit police and other emergency, conservation and rescue personnel in northern New Hampshire, was first tapped to build a home for Pequeno and his family last year.

"We set it up knowing full well it will be used," said foundation president and Sugar Hill Fire Chief Alan Clark. "What was not anticipated was this much activity in such a short time."

McKay had a 10-year-old daughter and 14-year-old stepdaughter.

His funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Cannon Mountain, followed by a private burial. Calling hours are scheduled for Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at Town Hall.

A procession of uniformed officers is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
