2 Killed, 1 Injured After Fiery Malden Crash

MALDEN, Mass. (WBZ) ― Two people are dead and a third person was critically injured after a car crashed into a Malden home early Friday morning.

Authorities said a 1996 BMW was traveling north on Route 28 when it left the roadway and crashed into a house at 75 Fellsway near Malden and Salem Streets at about 4:30 a.m.

It was then the car burst into flames. "I heard a big boom," said MacCollum, a witness WBZ spoke to at the crash scene. "It was like a car bomb about to go off."

"I was sleeping and I heard an explosion," said neighbor Antonio Holanda. "I opened the windows, and I see just a fire and a car."

Deputy Fire Chief Phillip Cargill said two people were pronounced dead at the scene. According to the Massachusetts State Police, 22-year-old Jean M. Olivier of Malden, who was behind the wheel of the car, was killed. Pauline Darilus, 18, was ejected from the car and also died.

Olivier's 17-year-old sister, Rachel Olivier, was also reportedly thrown from the car and rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital, where she is in critical condition.

Their devastated father, Luciano Olivier, said Rachel doesn't yet know her brother was killed in the horrific crash.

Everyone inside the home was evacuated, but none appear to be injured. The kitchen did sustain heavy damage as a result of the crash. Investigators said the gas tank in the car exploded and that the situation could have been much worse had it exploded inside the house.

According to police, the skid marks on the road and witness accounts indicate the car was driving very fast and was out of control, though the crash is not believed to be alcohol-related.

Route 28 was completely closed for about three and a half hours while officials investigated and removed the wreckage.
