A Wareham teenager who wasn't old enough to drive was killed overnight after police say she snuck off in her parents' car and crashed it after refusing to pull over for an officer.
Wareham police say they were not chasing 15-year-old Samantha Callow.
Investigators say Callow snuck out of her home around 3 a.m. and drove off in her parents' car, but didn't turn on the headlights.
Moments later she passed a police officer, who began to follow her, thinking it may have been an emergency because the driver was heading towards Tobey Hospital.
When the officer turned on his blue lights, he said Callow sped off, then lost control of the vehicle and went airborne. It smashed into a parked car in a driveway and landed on its roof on High Street.
"She didn't have any lights on," said witness Valerie Loring. "Both her and the cop were going quite fast. They should have backed up. They know more or less that this turns into a dead end."
Callow missed a turn and was thrown from the car that landed upside-down. She died at the scene.
Police say Callow's parents did not know she had the car.
Callow was a sophomore at Wareham High School.
"She was one of those kids who wasn't afraid to speak up when there was an issue, and that's something that we'll miss," said Wareham High School Principal Pat Clark.
Grief councilors will be staffed at the high school next week to aid students.
