Just hours after the Red Sox beat the Tigers at Fenway Park, Detroit first baseman Sean Casey was up early Tuesday morning to help some needy families in Lawrence.
He was serving breakfast to people at the Cor Unum Meals Center at St. Patrick's Church on South Broadway.
"I think it's important for all of us to be involved in the community, where ever you are, there's needs," Casey said, "and for us here at Cor Unum with the need here in Lawrence with feeding people, I think it's just awesome."
The center's director, Father Paul O'Brien, has received celebrity help before.
Brookline native Conan O'Brien is his college roommate. He came to the center last September for the grand opening.
The two raised close to half-a-million dollars for the center, much of it through T-shirt sales from Labels Are For Jars.
Casey has also used the T-shirts to raise money with his teammates. He met Father O'Brien 15 years ago when he was playing in the Cape Cod League.
According O'Brien, three-quarters of the children living in Lawrence are at risk for hunger. The average income in Lawrence is $14,000 - making it the poorest community in Massachusetts.
The Cor Unum Center serves three meals a day, 365 days a year.
Cor Unum means "one heart" in Latin.
