Sen. Kerry Responds To Taunton Evacuation
BOSTON (CBS4) ―
Fearing that Taunton's Whittendon Dam may breech, officials, including the city's mayor, Robert Nunes, have issued a state of emergency and the evacuation of 2,000 residents.
In a written statement Kerry said the following:
"Mayor Nunes took the vital steps in declaring a state of emergency and evacuating the area near the Whittendon Pond dam this afternoon in an effort to prevent a major catastrophe in Taunton. As the structural integrity of the Whittendon Pond Dam is in question, the federal government should be prepared to provide whatever resources and assistance necessary to protect the people and property of Taunton. With the devastating floods in Massachusetts this past week and the developing situation in Taunton we must have the ability to act to quickly to assist our communities in need."
