One local woman turned her grief over the loss of her brother on September 11 into a lasting memorial.
Katie Murphy remembers her brother and others during a visit to Framingham's September 11 memorial. Charlie Murphy was working on the 105th floor of the World Trade Center when the first plane hit. His picture was among many of the missing posted after the attack.
"Charlie was 38...absolutely loved life," said Murphy.
The death of her brother led Katie Murphy to spearhead the building of this memorial that is dedicated to the 17 victims with connections to Framingham.
"We wanted to make it a living memorial," said Murphy.
A tree and a marker commemorate each person. "I know I come here to say hello... on my brother's birthday."
A gazebo is situated for reflection. "I hope that it honors their lives and celebrates the energy and gifts that they brought to everyone around them that we miss," Murphy told us.
"I recall the devastation of that day, the sorrow of that day. I also really recall that in those terrible days afterward that the world stood with us," said Murphy. "And I think that's been lost and I think that's a loss for all of us."
"There's a powerful message to be taken from that day, and I believe that we'll honor those we lost by working as hard as we can to try and make a world where that won't happen again."
Two-hundred five people from Massachusetts, or with strong ties to the state, died in the September 11 attacks.
Tonight, Katie Murphy hopes that we all take a moment to remember the victims and their families.
