Ice Makes Monday Morning Commute Slick
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Freezing drizzle during the overnight hours and into Monday coated streets and driveways across Massachusetts with ice -- creating some treacherous conditions for motorists and walkers this morning.
Most main roads and highways have been treated with salt and sand, but remain wet and are still slick in some spots. Many side roads haven't been treated and remain very slippery -- as do parking lots and driveways.
WBZ's Rich Kirkland said the icy and wet conditions made for a much longer commute Monday morning. Many highways and main roads were moving slower than normal, especially north of Route 128 and parts of Southern New Hampshire.
A number of spinouts on the highways were reported, but luckily there were no serious accidents.
Walkers had no relief either. Sidewalks coated with ice made for some very dangerous conditions and some very sore backsides.
Several schools in the area were forced to delay the school day as crews worked to clear the ice and sand walkways.
According to meteorologist Barry Burbank, conditions will remain very slick until temperatures reach above freezing mark, which is not expected to happen in many spots today.
By Tuesday, conditions will be quiet and cold, and by Tuesday night, we should see a light ice/rain mix in the area. More cold and wet weather is expected on Thursday.
