Marine Dads Find Support In Friendship

YARMOUTH (WBZ) ― On Cape Cod Saturday, volunteers wrapped up a collection drive for local Marines fighting overseas.

Food, clothing and other donated items were collected and boxed up for shipment, there was also an emotional meeting of two Marine dads.

Yarmouth police Lt. Steve Xiarhos' son, Nick, is serving in Iraq.

During combat last April, Nick's life was saved by Christian Haerter's son, Lance Corporal Jordan Haerter, of Sag Harbor, New York, who was killed.

"He died doing his job, and he did it very well, actually, for that," Christian Haerter said. "I can't tell you how proud I am. I'm just busting out proud, that's how proud I am."

"It's a very emotional and powerful thing," Xiarhos said. "We are Marine fathers, and that will last forever."

Ziarhos also said it's a very powerful thing for U.S. troops to receive items donated from home. He said it makes them feel they're not forgotten.
