Hyannis Police Looking For Stolen Whale Sculpture

HYANNIS (CBS4) ― Hyannis police are on the lookout for a stolen whale sculpture. This one shouldn't be too hard to find. It weighs 400-pounds.

From Provincetown to Bourne, the main streets of Cape Cod are now dotted with colorful whale sculptures.

It's called the Whale Trail. But now there's a gap in it. One was ripped right off its base.

"All of Cape Cod came together around this Whale Trail which was really exciting," said Cynthia Cole of the Hyannis Business District.

Like the others, the stolen whale was to be auctioned off at the end of summer with the money going to charities.

"This is kind of a sad case of art imitating life. We spend alot of time at the International Fund for Animal Welfare protecting live whales in the water, they get stolen too, through pollution and illegal whaling. This was the last thing that crossed our minds when we unveiled this whale...," said Pat Ramage.

During auctioning each whale would have raised from two to ten thousand dollars but this is money lost to the Fund for Animal Welfare.

It's also a loss to the community.

"It's just a shame, you can't put anything out that doesn't last more than ten days before someone either vandalizes it, steals it, or mutilates it, or something along those lines," said Sgt. Sean Sweeney of the Barnstable police.
