State officials have learned that the Storrow Drive Tunnel in Boston was not waterproofed when it was constructed in 1951, according to a published report.
That might make repairing it impossible, which could force the state to build a new one, a much more costly alternative.
Simply repairing the tunnel would cost an estimated $52 million. A new tunnel is likely to cost about $130 million, while a proposal to fill in the tunnel and replace it with a new underpass is estimated to cost $80 million.
According to The Boston Globe, Cranston R. Rogers, a structural engineer for the state in the 1950's, told the Department of Conservation and Recreation that the lack of waterproofing has led to extensive structual damage in the tunnel.
