Report: Tax Evader Pardoned By Dukakis In 70s

MANCHESTER, N.H. (WBZ) ― The Plainfield man defying authorities after being convicted of tax evasion was convicted of armed assault as a young man in Massachusetts and pardoned.

The New Hampshire Union Leader uncovered records of the 1976 pardon, which was granted by then-Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis.

Ed Brown was 18 when he was convicted of trying to rob someone in Somerville in 1960. He was armed with an unspecified dangerous weapon. He was sent to prison and then paroled.

His request for a pardon was supported by an advisory board, and Dukakis -- who later ran for president -- granted it in 1976.

Brown -- now 64 -- is holed up in his self-sufficient Plainfield home. He and his wife are vowing to resist any effort to make them serve a five-year prison sentences for tax evasion.
