Charges Against Ted Johnson And Wife Dropped

WESTON (CBS4) ― Assault and battery charges against former Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson and his wife have been dropped. Both were arrested at their Weston home back in July after a domestic disturbance.

Johnson and his wife Jackie each asserted their marital privilege not to testify in the case during a hearing in Waltham District Court Tuesday morning. The case was then dismissed.

Police were called to the Johnson's home around 8 p.m. July 16 for a domestic dispute over some medication.

According to the police report obtained by CBS4, the two had been arguing about prescription drugs prescribed to Ted that Jackie was trying to take. In the report, Jackie said a struggle began and Ted grabbed her by the arm, twisted it behind her and pushed her into the bookcase. The report said she defended herself by punching, pushing, and scratching him.

In an interview with CBS4's Bob Lobel in July, the Johnsons said their arrests were "a terrible misunderstanding."

"I take responsibility for this. I really do" Jackie Johnson told Lobel. "My husband, I adore him, and, it was my fault, it was my fault. And that's why I wanted to come forward."

"It breaks my heart to think I would be responsible with one emotional, irresponsible call in destroying this beautiful man's reputation."

Both pleaded not guilty to the charges during their arraignment in July.

According to court records obtained by CBS4, the Johnsons, who have four children, did not want police to pursue the matter.

Johnson retired from the Patriots in 2005 because of repeated concussions. He was drafted by the Pats in 1995 out of Colorado and played ten seasons in Foxboro. The 6-foot-4-inch, 253-pound linebacker made 865 tackles and 11.5 sacks during his career.

Last season, he worked as a football analyst for CBS4. In May, he informed the station that he had decided to pursue other opportunities for the 2006 season.
