Is It Safe For Bruschi To Return To Football?
by Dr. Mallika Marshall
(CBS4)
Patriot Tedy Bruschi was hospitalized last February after complaining of numbness in his left arm and leg.
Doctors believe he suffered a mild stroke caused by a blood clot that traveled through a small hole in his heart, which has since been surgically repaired.
Bruschi has been working out regularly and was medically cleared Sunday to return to practice this week. As you can imagine, a team of experts will be monitoring him very closely.
How risky is it for Bruschi to resume football practice? He has a few things working in his favor. The fact that his stroke appeared to a mild one, and that he's already made a full recovery.
Doctors were also able to repair the hole in his heart which they believe caused the stroke.
The other big factor is that he was in such good physical shape to begin with.
The warning signs of a stroke can include numbness, weakness or paralysis in the face, arm or leg, especially if this occurs on only one side of the body. Other symptoms include impaired vision, sudden and severe headache, difficulty speaking or understanding simple statements, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.
