Lawrence Meal Center Helps To Combat Hunger
by Peg Rusconi
BOSTON (CBS4) ―
A lot of people who would've had nowhere to go this Thanksgiving now have a wonderful memory as a shelter that just opened in Lawrence was able to feed hundreds of hungry people this holiday.
It's the first thanksgiving at Cor Unum, a meal center that opened in September to combat hunger in Lawrence.
The people who come here to eat are treated like guests served at the table.
"It's friendly people. Good food. It's good for someone if you're struggling a little in the month," said David Young of Lawrence.
On any given night the kitchen here prepares meals for 300-people - one third of who are children.
Father Paul O'Brien spearheaded the drive to build Cor Unum. There were headlines when his famous college roommate - comedian Conan O'Brien - no relation- helped to raise money. But he says the center is helping create community in a city with a lot of need.
"People who are guests volunteer and people who volunteer eat with guests so everyone ends up serving one another over time," O'Brien said.
