Former Massachusetts House Speaker Thomas Finneran says he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Finneran is scheduled to undergo prostate removal surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital on December 21. Because of his age, overall health and an early diagnosis, Finneran says his prospects for a full recovery are "excellent."
In a statement posted on the Web site of WRKO-AM, where he hosts a morning talk show, the 57-year-old ex-speaker said the diagnosis did not come as a surprise because of his father's medical history.
Finneran says he expects to return to his radio show on January 2, providing on-site coverage of the Iowa caucuses scheduled for the following day.
