Accident Closes Mass. Pike East In Hopkinton

Hopkinton (WBZ) ― The morning commute became a nightmare Tuesday for many drivers after a tractor trailer crashed on the Mass. Pike in Hopkinton.

State police say a tractor-trailer rolled over just before exit 11A in Hopkinton, blocking all eastbound lanes and backing up rush hour traffic for miles. Eventually one lane was re-opened.

The entire highway wasn't re-opened until 1:10 Wednesday afternoon, more than six and a half hours later.

WBZ's Rich Kirkland said the traffic was backed up as much as 15 miles during the morning rush hour.

Sgt. Dave Mahan says two other vehicles were involved in the accident, which occurred about 6:30 a.m. near the exit to Rt. 495.

Emergency crews worked to free the driver of the tractor-trailer, who was trapped in the cab after the crash.

Mahan says one other person was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

The truck was believed to have been carrying paint supplies; thankfully none of them spilled. However crews are dealing with a diesel spill from the truck.

Mahan says only the left lane of the four-lane turnpike was open to traffic after the crash and the back-up was believed to stretch for several miles.
