Mass. Pike To Focus On Speeders, Tolls In 2008
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority is looking for ways to cut costs and increase revenue -- and speeders and toll takers are on the radar.
A 2008 budget plan projects $600,000 more in revenue through additional state police radar enforcement. That means more tickets for speeding drivers.
Separate from the budget, turnpike officials are looking for ways to get more drivers to use the Fast Lane transponders to pay tolls. Officials eventually hope to reduce the number of toll booth workers.
There are 550 toll takers on Massachusetts roads, comprising about half of the turnpike's work force.
The turnpike is also raising tolls in the new year.
In October the turnpike board voted to raise tolls by 25 cents at the Allston-Brighton and Weston tolls. The increase will be twice as much at the Williams and Sumner Tunnels, where tolls are going up by 50 cents. All the increases take effect in January.
