UMass To Hike Tuition
BOSTON (CBS4) ―
UMass is raising tuition for the fifth straight year.
The school's Administration and Finance Committee has approved a 3.4% tuition and fee increase for in-state undergraduate students for the 2006-2007 academic year.
University President Jack M. Wilson said, "For the third consecutive year, the student charge increase will be below the increase in the rate of inflation, in keeping with our policy of maintaining an inflation cap during those years in which the state increases the University's appropriation."
The current inflation rate is 3.6 percent, as measured by the Consumer Price Index for the Northeast Urban Region.
The additional revenue raised by the tuition and fee increase will be used for a variety of purposes, including the recruitment of new faculty members, maintenance and repair of facilities and technology upgrades.
The Administration and Finance Committee's recommendation will be voted on by the full Board of Trustees on Wednesday, February 15, at UMass-Dartmouth.
Total mandatory student charges for academic year 2006-2007 will be:
Amherst: $9,595
Boston: $8,546
Dartmouth: $8,309
Lowell: $8,444
