Tuition and fees in the University of Massachusetts system will rise by 3.4 percent for the 2007-2008 academic year, under a plan approved Wednesday by the university's trustees.
Tuition and fees for in-state students at UMass' four undergraduate campuses will rise on average from $8,918 to $9,221, the university announced.
The increase was recommended by university President Jack M. Wilson, who said it's the fourth straight year that increases were kept at or below the rate of inflation.
Stephen Tocco, chairman of the Board of Trustees, said the increase is "fair and modest."
Including room and board, total costs for an in-state undergraduate student will be: $17,755 at Dartmouth; $17,399 at Amherst; $15,709 at Lowell; $8,837 in Boston, which does not have campus housing.
UMass' fifth campus is the medical school in Worcester.
