Maine Man Says Sister Survived Va. Tech Rampage
by Beth Germano
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
With more chilling insight into the murderous rampage of Cho Seung-Hui, we hear the horrifying story of death and survival from the brother of Virginia Tech junior Katie Carney who was wounded inside a classroom.
"He walked in, immediately started shooting. All the kids hit the floor. He killed every student in the front row of seats and worked his way back, row after row," said Danny Carney, of Kittery, Maine.
His sister had two fingers shattered by bullets as she hid behind a desk.
"They found particles of wood in her hand from where the bullet went through the desk."
One of the few still alive, Katie and two others barricaded the door when Cho finally left.
"That's the point at which he pounded on door, started throwing his body on the door. When he couldn't get it open all the way, he started shooting through the door, the shots flying above my sister's head."
Katie witnessed the killing of her favorite professor, Jamie Bishop, and only today could reveal the massacre to her brother.
At home in Newton, Virginia Tech senior Beth Goldberg is seeking solace with her family after a long trip home.
She wears the pride but carries the heavy burden. After this, she worries what campus life will be like when she returns.
"It's going to hit me when I'm back to class, sitting in classroom with thirty, fifty or sixty people and think could someone walk in right now?"
Katie Carney is expected out of the hospital Thursday. Though her brother says it may be awhile before she returns to campus.
Beth Goldberg's graduation is supposed to be less than a month away. She says for now, everything is on hold.
