Prosecutors Say Affair Led To Wakefield Murders

CAMBRIDGE (CBS4) ― The man charged with killing two employees at a Wakefield concrete company allegedly had an affair with the wife of one of the victims.

Sean Fitzpatrick, 44, is accused of shooting 39-year-old Michael Zammitti and 54-year-old Chester Roberts at Allstate Concrete Pumping in March.

At his arraignment Wednesday morning, prosecutors revealed for the first time that Zammitti's wife had a physical relationship and that the shootings happened after she refused to leave her husband.

Earlier this month, after Fitzpatrick was arrested, District Attorney Martha Coakley said he was interested in pursuing a relationship with Michael Zammitti's wife but that no relationship had developed.

Since then, prosecutors said Michelle Zammitti conceded she and Fitzpatrick had an emotional relationship which became physical in early 2005. The Zammitti family has said Fitzpatrick was a longtime trusted friend who lived near the Zammitti's summer home in Freedom, New Hampshire.

Assistant District Attorney Edward Bedrosian told the judge that in February, about a month before the slayings, Michelle Zammitti told Fitzpatrick she did not intend to leave her husband, despite his urging. She also told investigators she and her husband, who have three children, had been having marital problems.

Fitzpatrick's arrest came months after the murders. He's being held without bail.

District Attorney Martha Coakley said a break in the case came when detectives found the vehicle Fitzpatrick allegedly drove to Wakefield. The vehicle, which had evidence inside, had been stolen in Freedom, Coakley said.

Investigators believe Roberts was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
