Cab Driver Still Critical After Somerville Crash

METHUEN (WBZ) ― Walid and Fida Chahine are a loving couple with roots in Lebanon, making a life here in America.

Fida now waits with her four-year-old son Joseph, for word from the hospital.

Forty-five-year-old Walid is in extremely critical condition at Mass. General Hospital. He was the cab driver involved in Sunday morning's horrific crash in Somerville.

The cab was broadsided by an SUV which had been pursued by State Police.

Paul Farris, a passenger in the cab, has already died. His girlfriend, Katelyne Hoyt, is also listed in critical condition.

And now there are grave concerns about Walid who is on life support.

"He's still in critical condition," said family friend Elias Bassell. "It's very difficult on everyone."

Fida said she hasn't slept much since getting word about the accident Sunday morning. She says Joseph is already having a difficult time, wondering why his father isn't coming home.

Walid has an electrical engineering degree and dreamed of the day when he could stop driving a cab.

"He's a good family man, I've known him for years. It's just a tragedy," said Bassell.

Walid's family is thanking everyone for their concern. They also have financial worries about the cost of all of this because they have little if any insurance.

The State Police is investigating its pursuit policies in the wake of the tragedy.
